This is the personal website of Emilio Martines, a physicist working in the field of research on plasma (ionized gases) physics, with applications ranging from controlled thermonuclear fusion to electric propulsion for space applications to biomedical applications. Apart from these specific activities, his interest is focused on energy issues, and more generally on environmental issues.

I am one of the main authors of a paper titled "Self-organized helical equilibria as a new paradigm for ohmically heated fusion plasmas" featured in the August 2009 issue of Nature Physics. The paper, which obtained also the journal cover, describes important results about the spontaneous onset of helically symmetric states in RFP plasmas. This result opens up new perspectives about the possibility of using the RFP configuration as the basis for a compact and technologically simple fusion reactor.
